CIBC AVENTURA REWARDS

A few words about the Aventura Program:

  • Pros: any airline, any flight, any seat, you can use points to cover full airfare including taxes and fees, points don’t expire as long as you maintain your account.
  • While you can, it’s not really worth redeeming Aventura points for anything but airline travel, particularly if you apply them to Current Promotions
  • You can use Aventura points to pay the taxes and fees on the plane ticket too.
  • Cons:  you  can only redeem Aventura points for Aeroplan Miles if you have an eligible Aventura Account issued before October 1, 2013.
  • The redemption rate is highly variable; it can be difficult to know in advance how many points you will need for a given trip (see below).

How to Redeem CIBC Aventura Points

To book flights with Aventura points, log in to your CIBC rewards account and go to the travel section. Because Aventura points are not allied with any particular airline, you will have lots of choices.

Aventura points are not quite cash, but not exactly like Aeroplan’s “Classic” rewards either. Like Aeroplan, they are zoned; unlike Aeroplan “Classic” rewards, the number of points you need for a flight is not fixed. For example, a long haul flight in Canada and the US will cost between 25,000 and 35,000 points – unless the ticket is more than $800, in which case it will be more than 35,000 points – possibly a lot more. If your domestic long-haul flight costs $950, the remaining $150 would cost an additional 15,000 points (charged at a rate of $1 = 100 points).

If you don’t have all the points you need for the ticket, you can buy points at $.03 each – but only up to 20% of the ticket price.
