Best Hotel Reward Card Deals for Canadians – 2018

stack of credit cards

Over the last number of years there have been fewer and fewer hotel reward credit card opportunities. And the sad fact is that, for those that are left, the annual fees and minimum spends have gone up and the sign-up bonuses and perks have gone down. Unlike our neighbours to the south, there are not many hotel credit card options available to Canadians; however, those that are available are amongst the best hotel credit card options in the world.

As mid-century moderns we have to admit that our backs are not what they used to be. We like to sleep in a comfortable bed (far too many “open air”, hostel, kibbutz, Greek monastery beds…). We also like hot showers, new toiletries and free luxury accommodations in chichi neighbourhoods… While there are alternative accommodation options (e.g., timeshares, house/apartment swaps, AirB&B) we generally prefer using hotels. When we travel, not cleaning, cooking and navigating the bookings and emergencies that frequently arise in a foreign language is of value to us.

Frequent flyers who use the hotel brands should consider enrolling in:

  • hotel loyalty programs (they programs are free of charge, and provide perks such as room upgrades, access to lounges which often include food and booze, complimentary Wi-Fi, free stays); and,
  • Canadian hotel credit cards (to earn hotel points and perks).

In a nutshell if you are using the hotel products not having a loyalty and hotel branded credit card increases your costs.
